What Is Ashletics?

The name joins two worlds that rarely meet: ash and athletics. The result is a cigar competition that does not take itself too seriously, while taking fair competition very seriously.

Ashletics is not a race to finish a cigar, nor is it an imitation of slow-smoking competition. It rewards control, patience, concentration, consistency, combustion management and a remarkably steady hand. Competitors must understand the cigar, preserve an even burn and resist the instinct to tap away the growing ash.

At a few millimetres, everyone is relaxed. At several centimetres, the room begins to pay attention. As the ash grows, movements become smaller, conversations become quieter and every competitor begins to realise just how fragile a lead can be.

One cigar. One ash. One champion.

The Return After 2014

The competition was last held in 2014. Its return to New Delhi is both a revival and a new beginning: a more developed championship identity, clearer official rules, visible judging and the ambition to build records, rivalries and future editions beyond a single event.

What makes the format work is its clarity. A photograph of a competitor holding a cigar beneath an improbable tower of ash explains the challenge instantly. Experienced aficionados can test their technique; newer smokers can understand the objective within seconds; spectators can follow the tension without needing to study a complicated scoring system.

How the Competition Works

Draw: Every competitor receives the official competition cigar, prepared and stored under the same conditions.

Light: Cigars are lit only during the official lighting period under the supervision of the judges.

Build: Competitors smoke naturally while protecting the integrity of the growing ash column.

Break: When the continuous ash falls or the attempt otherwise ends, the qualifying length and elapsed ash time are recorded.

Ash length is the primary championship result. Elapsed ash time is recorded as a secondary performance statistic and decides the result only when two competitors achieve the same verified length. A separate Last Ash Standing recognition may be awarded to the competitor whose original continuous ash remains attached for the longest time.

Official Ashletics WorldCup Competition Rules

Objective: Build the longest continuous ash and keep it naturally attached for as long as possible.

No tapping. No touching. No supporting. No relighting.

1. Same Cigar. Same Conditions.
Every competitor receives the official competition cigar, prepared and stored under the same conditions. Cigars may not be exchanged, altered, wetted, compressed or reinforced.

2. Official Start and Lighting
Competitors light only during the official lighting period. Once the Head Judge declares, “ASHLETICS HAS BEGUN”, competition rules apply. No relighting is permitted after the lighting period.

3. The Objective
Create the longest naturally formed, continuous column of ash while it remains physically attached to the cigar. Ash length is the primary result; time is recorded as a secondary performance statistic.

4. Hold the Cigar, Not the Ash
Only the unburned portion of the cigar may be supported. The ash may not touch fingers, tables, glasses, ashtrays, furniture or any other object.

5. Do Not Manipulate the Ash
No pressing, shaping, straightening, compressing, touching or rebuilding. A cracked ash remains valid only if it stays attached naturally and without assistance.

6. If the Ash Falls, the Attempt Ends
A fall occurs when the continuous ash column separates, is deliberately removed or becomes independently supported by another object. Small surface flakes do not automatically end an attempt.

7. Official Measurement
Ash is measured from the active burn line to the furthest continuous intact point. Judges may use rulers, reference boards, photographs or video. The longest verified measurement remains valid even if the ash later falls.

8. Who Wins?
The Ashletics World Champion is the competitor with the longest officially verified continuous ash. If two competitors record the same length, the longer elapsed ash time wins.

9. Last Ash Standing
The event may separately recognise the competitor whose original continuous ash remains attached for the longest time. This title does not replace the World Championship result unless that competitor also has the longest ash.

10. Fair Play
Do not shake tables, blow towards competitors, touch another competitor or cigar, or deliberately distract anyone. Accidental self-inflicted movement is part of the competition; deliberate interference is not.

11. Judges and Disqualification
Judges may issue warnings or disqualify competitors for touching or supporting ash, altering the cigar, unauthorised relighting, dishonest conduct, interference or unsafe behaviour. The Head Judge’s decision is final.

12. Safety and Spirit
Follow all venue and fire-safety instructions. Compete with courtesy, humour and respect. Ashletics is serious competition wrapped in a wonderfully unnecessary challenge.
