My Father Cigars has acquired the Fonseca cigar brand\u00a0from the Quesada family, who have rolled Fonsecas in the Dominican Republic for 45 years. My Father will be shifting production of the brand to Estel\u00ed, Nicaragua, and plans\u00a0some changes to the cigar. The Cuban version of Fonseca dates back to the 1800s.<\/p>\n
Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.<\/p>\n
Manuel \u201cManolo\u201d Quesada has been making Fonsecas in the Dominican Republic since he opened his first factory in that country in 1974. The cigars were originally rolled in Santiago, then moved to Licey when Quesada\u2019s company opened a new factory in that part of the country. The first non-Cuban Fonsecas were rated in the Spring 1993 issue of\u00a0Cigar Aficionado<\/em>.<\/p>\n The Cuban version of Fonseca was created in the 1890s by Francisco Fonseca, according to Habanos S.A. (The cigar brand is not related to the Port of the same name.) Today, the brand is one of Cuba\u2019s smaller ones, with only a few sizes still in production. Spain is one of Fonseca\u2019s bigger markets.<\/p>\n It was in Spain that talks for the sale began. In September, Janny Garcia of\u00a0My Father Cigars\u00a0spoke with Patricia Quesada, one of Manuel\u2019s daughters, about the potential for a sale. Garcia has worked with Patricia and Raquel Quesada in the past on a cigar brand called\u00a0Tres Reynas\u00a0(or Three Queens), which\u00a0debuted in 2012.<\/p>\n \u201cFor us, it\u2019s a huge honor that Manolo agreed to sell the brand to us,\u201d said Garcia\u00a0in a conversation with\u00a0Cigar Aficionado<\/em>\u00a0this morning. \u201cWe couldn\u2019t be prouder of such a name.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe felt that Fonseca deserved a nice home,\u201d said Manuel Quesada to\u00a0Cigar Aficionado<\/em>. \u201cAnd we found it.\u201d Quesada, 72, is a member of the\u00a0Cigar Aficionado<\/em>\u00a0Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n The Garcia family has ties to Fonseca that go beyond this deal; when they were cigar rollers in Baez, Cuba, some of the family members actually rolled Fonseca cigars, along with many other Cuban brands. \u201cJaime and Pepin made Fonseca,\u201d said Janny Garcia.<\/p>\n Janny Garcia said the company has plans to make changes, while respecting tradition. \u201cWe\u2019re going to add that touch of My Father,\u201d she said, \u201cbut we want to honor the Cuban vibe of the brand.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" My Father Cigars has acquired the Fonseca cigar brand\u00a0from the Quesada family, who have rolled Fonsecas in the Dominican Republic for 45 years.
